About Me

Blog web6
Hi,
Welcome to my website. I am Kimi.

I started to blog about 7 years ago in 2010 with blog.web6.org. My goal was to write anything I found that could solve my own daily computing or internet problems, documented it so that when people have the same problems, they would probably be able to solve them too.

When I started blog.web6.org, I started as a newbie blogger, at the time I even let my husband choose the domain name for me (web6.org). Then, I thought to save money, I build websites on the subdomain, in blog.web6.org. In blog.web6.org I wanted to blog about Computer and WordPress or blogging tips. Then in web6.org I wanted to write about my daily life. I did not know anything about SEO thing at that time, anything to save money to build many websites. πŸ˜€

Why do I write this on this page? Because after 7 years experience on blogging, this is apparently a typical newbie mistake that everyone should avoid.

I moved my older website, which was blog.web6.org to wpvidz.com, because I realised, I am interested on blogging for different topics, which are WordPress, and Computer tips from my daily experience using computers at home.

From my story above, these are things that I wish I knew at the time;

1. Choose .com domain, in my experience it is the best extension. Disagree? leave a comment below, I’d like to hear your opinion.

2. If you want to build many websites, you can have many websites in different domains using one web host. Means once you sign up for a web hosting plan, you can just buy another domain name, and host the domain with your current web host. One domain costs about 10 USD a year, or even less with coupons or discount deals.

This is something I didn’t know back then.

I write this here, as same as the goal of this website.

If you are new to blogging or WordPress, I will help to prevent you having the same mistakes as I had.

This website contains mostly video tutorials step by step how to pictures and screenshots and those are my own videos. I don’t hire someone. Whenever I found a few problems that are related to WordPress websites and are solved, I post them here with my intention to help people.

This said, if you think you know, say, a better method, please chime in and let me know. Be it in comments or send me a message from my contact page. I will really appreciate it, so we can help others.

So if you are starting WordPress, and want to learn from the beginning, feel free to browse my posts and I recommend you to read my Privacy policy and Term of use pages first.

Every methods in my posts work well with me, but it doesn’t mean it will work for you, since we have different websites, different installed plugins, different problems with them. So I strongly recommend to always backup your website, and try everything in your local WordPress blog first before applying it to your online WordPress blog. Here is a short video to install WordPress blog in Windows and Mac.

I hope you will enjoy my website and If you need help, just leave a comment or contact me, I will be glad to help if I can.

Lastly I want to thank you for visiting my blog, I hope you find something useful.

Kimi.

        Hi Kimi,

        thanks.
        Why not put a little “About me” or “Who’s blogging” box on the top right of your blog? Photo and a few short lines+call to action at the end.
        I know it’s extremely valuable space, but I think your persona can be a big asset for you. First, you are really cute, and second you are very likeable. Don’t underestimate how much this encourages visitors to want to stay on your website and interact with you in this digital world πŸ™‚
        Best of luck and success to you!

          You’re most welcome, well, I did put a tab menu which is labelled “About Me” on the top there ↑

          I guess two photos are enough on this page, since I have on the page itself and on the footer πŸ™‚

    Kimi,

    First off, thanks for assisting so many people who are trying to get their arms wrapped around WP. I read your post and created a copy of my twenty ten, but I had already made many changes (basically making it a website). If my WP updates, will I lose the changes I previosuly made prior to making a copy?
    Thanks

    • Kimi says

      June 10, 2011 at 6:43 pm

      Hi Bill,

      No it won’t loose the modifications, unless you change the php files. I assume you change the css, so it will not be changed if you copy it.

      I also recommend, saving your modified files in your computer for safety.

      I hope it will help,

      Kind regards,

      Kimi.

        Ummmm, no. I had made changes in the header php such as changing the image, installing a logo, removing archives, changing the tag line. Im pretty srue I did all of it in php before creating the copy. Im in trouble?

          June 11, 2011 at 7:51 pm

          If you edit the PHP, yes, it can be a problem when it is updating.

    Hi Kime
    I just stumbled upon your blog and I see you use thesis. I do too.
    I have a very annoying problem though that you might be able to help me solve. I checked it out and I see you’ve somehow overcome it on your blog.
    I’ve tried posting on the thesis forum, but the good people there haven’t answered me yet. If you know the solution on top of your head, I’d be much obliged if you’ld share it.
    The problem is this: Every time I share a post from my blog on Facebook or other social media the thumbnail associated to the post is my WordPress avatar (check http://www.facebook.com/storyhunter). Instead I’d like to be able to choose from thumbnails of pictures in the post itself. Do you know the settings for that? Do I need to add some code to my custum_function-php? How do you get thumps from your posts to show up when sharing on fb.
    Thanks in advance. Also for a great blog,
    Torben

    Hi Kimi: New to wordpress and your site. Enjoyed the tutorial on getting multiple blog pages in wordpress. Two questions if you can answer. First , I just installed wp and installed the standard pages. If I add one or two additional blog pages using your method will I be able to arrange them on the title bar in the order I want? your example only had two blog pages and nothing else, just checking. Also, somebody commented that backing up could be a problem. If I alter the php files like you suggest and backup how wordpress recommends will I be ok or do you recommend an alternate method?

    • Kimi says

      September 20, 2011 at 3:56 pm

      Hello Bruce,

      welcome to my blog.

      To answer your question;
      1. The page order on your tab, it depends on the theme you are using, I have checked your site, and saw the theme is a custom theme..
      However, if it supports the new menu system, it can be down very easily in your dashboard.
      Quick tutorial: https://www.wpvidz.com/wordpress-change-home-page/
      But if the theme doesn’t support it, then you will need to edit the PHP file, can’t tell which file, since every theme is different.
      2. Unfortunately I don’t really understand, what kind of php files were you referring to? the theme or the whole blog?
      For the theme backup, you can download and save the folder in your computer.
      For the blog, you can ask the host if they backup your site automatically, but personally I backup myself to make sure 100%.
      Quick link: https://www.wpvidz.com/backup-wordpress-database/
      https://www.wpvidz.com/back-up-and-restore-in-wordpress/

      I hope these will help.

      Kind regards,

      Kimi.

    Hello Kimi
    I start with wordpress beginning July and I use twenty eleven as theme. It’s the first time I create a blog, previously I maintain a website made by another person.
    I find your tutorials very interesting, they were very helpful for me. I follow particularly step by step two of them: Child theme and ‘add a logo’. As I see you know very well twenty eleven I ask you a question that I cannot solve. I would like to change the background of my posts and sidebar. I find that the white is too white. I search but I cannot finf the solution. You can see on the link: http://www.pibracroller.com
    Perhaps could you help me?
    Please could you excuse my bad english level, it’d not my mother language and I’m not fluent.
    Kimi, I thank you for the help you already gave me with your fabulous tutorials.

      article.intro{background:#fff;}

      Let me know if this helps.

      Kimi.

    Kimi,

    Thank you SO much for your tutorials! They helped me so much with the site I’ve built. Your site is an amazing wealth of knowledge.

    I have a question: I didn’t realize the importance of a child theme until too late… I’d already made a couple of changes (like make the menu a different color and remove the comment boxes from the pages). Is there a way for me to get back the original files from twenty eleven, and then make my alterations in the child, or do I need to wait to see if WordPress updates the Theme?

    I did make a child after, thanks to your tutorial, and then I used two other articles of yours to make the headr smaller and get rid of the white space above the header. Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!

      Hi Erika!

      Welcome to my blog.

      I apologize, as I don’t really understand your question πŸ™

      Is there a way for me to get back the original files from twenty eleven, and then make my alterations in the child, or do I need to wait to see if WordPress updates the Theme?

      Do you mean, how to get back to twenty eleven original theme? If yes, you can change your theme, in “Appearance” tab in your admin dashboard, and choose the theme.

      If you need to change a few things on Twenty Eleven, you have two ways,

      1. Editing the original theme, means, you will edit the original Twenty Eleven theme files directly, which has disadvantage (your modification will be overwritten with the wordpress theme’s update).

      or

      2. Copying or creating child theme means you will create a new folder and not editing the original theme files, which will help keeping your modification remains even if there is an update for the twenty eleven.

      Let me know if I answer right?

      Kimi.

          Hey Kimi,

          I have searched all day for this, and I can’t find it. I want to either (1) add a border around my center column (the part of each page with content – is it called the body?) or (2) change the background color of the center column to a very light grey. Both of these would be to set it apart from the wallpaper image, which also has a white background. Can you please tell me what to add to my child’s style.css? For #2, I tried:

          body {
          background-color: red;

          }

          with “red” in there, just to see if it would work – and it didn’t do anything. Can you please help me?

          Thanks,
          Erika

    I was feeling so intimidated by the WordPress.org support/forum. As a beginner, I decided to go to YouTube where I found your tutorial, How to create Twenty Eleven Child Theme WordPress 3.2 Tutorial – fantastic. Just bought your 60 Videos package and will be getting into it this week.

    Thank you and God Bless You.
